Although pot is legal in British Columbia, it's not legal in Saskatchewan - nor should it be.
Short POT.
Although I love Canada and I have a bias towards Canadians, I think POT is overvalued. Doing the usual procedure I follow in eVal (valuation software), I find a target price of $63, much lower than the current price of $176. POT has a high PE, a high price/book, a high F-score and high accruals - so I'm concerned, as it doesn't have the value/quality story that I would like to see. It has quite a lot of analyst coverage already, so I don't see many more analysts taking coverage of the stock. It's quite possible that more analysts might 'drop coverage' on the stock, and if that happens, that seems like a strong negative catalyst to me. After all, some analysts love to cover stocks that they like, but they seem to drop coverage on ones they hate. Weird, isn't it?
Would you like a few nice chemical companies to look at?
How about: DOW, FOE, LZ, MEOH, NCX, OMG, POL and SHI
I'm sorry; I'll pass on POT and get addicted to another stock.

Yeah, that's it dumbass: USE A COMPUTER TO DECIDE IF A STOCK IS OVERVAULED OR NOT! NO WONDER YOU GOT A TARGET PRICE OF $63. DON'T BOTHER TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THAT POT HAS JUST SIGNED A MILLION TON DEAL WITH CHINA AT $500 A TON OR THAT THEY'RE BUYING BACK $2 BILLION OF THEIR OWN STOCK, THAT SOME SEE POTASH PER TON MAY EQUAL OR EXCEED $1 THOUSAND A TON, AND THAT IT WILL CRUSH EARNINGS THURSDAY THE 24TH. POT IS CHEAP RIGHT NOW AND IS ONLY GOING TO GET MORE EXPENSIVE AS THE YEAR ROLLS ON. AHKNATEN YOU ARE NO STOCK PHAROAH. GET STUFFED!

hey, thanks for your comments.
how much do you think the stock is worth, or are you just spinning a 'story' to me?

Spinning a story? DO YOUR RESEARCH! When you first posted the stock was at $176. After close on Monday the 21st it is now $209. Just think of all the money you could have made between now and then! Of course it's going to sell off; every great stock, no matter what it's worth, will. I've spent days taking $10 or more a share losses-in one day! Yet, I stay long, get my money back and then make more! And I bought it at $84 back in July 2007! Look-China and India are buying potash by the millions of tons and they're not going to stop as long as they have a vested interest in feeding their people. And I only know one country-North Korea-that won't! As far as I am concerned there is no better entry point than the present. One RBS analyst raised her price target from $250 to $300. And if you still think Potash is too expensive get into Mosaic (MOS), and if that's still too expensive wait and see on the IPO Intrepid Potash (ICI) when it starts trading Thursday the 24th. But Potashcorp is considered the Saudi Arabia of Potash and there is no finer company in the ag sector when the world can't get enough of the stuff!

Correction on Intrepid. It's symbol will be "IPI", not "ICI."

IPI will be an interesting one to watch. i'm curious to see what happens.
so do you have a catalyst in mind that would create a selling point for you and grab another stock instead? quite often the sell discipline is more important than the buy discipline.
would you look for a decline in growth? something with technicals? eps miss?
if i go back a year or two ago, the std deviation of the analysts estimates was lower. nowadays, the analysts are much less consistent and their estimates are fluctuating around. so even from an analyst perspective, things aren't so obvious as they seem to disagree. last qtr they beat by 12 cents, well... now i'll be bullish and expect them to beat by 12 cents, and if they don't.... then i'm disappointed.
so RBS raises the target price... but what do you think it's worth?
it's quite possible you're right, and i wish you the best.

As I was writing previous post I turned to Cramer and saw him talking about IPI on his show. As for POT, and what it's worth, I have to go with Cramer (mind you I'm not much of a fan even though I watch his show; he's made some really bad calls i.e. SIR and GOOG), but this stock should be in the $383 range. I'm going to be long POT no matter what happens because the ag story is still, I believe, years left to go. There will not be a decline in growth-that's for sure. Their spending billions on opening old mines they've taken off line to keep the price artificially high. They should also crush earnings-just like MOS did April 4. Another one is Agrium (AGU) that I, regrettfully, bailed at $75 and is now $92. I got out the day before they announced their 1 mil ton deal with China. I will be getting into IPI because I feel it will charge ahead just like POT, just like MOS, just like AGU. I really feel the last thing you need to do with these stocks is short them. You may get burned. If you short and don't get burned then you're the smartest man on the planet. I wish you the best as well, and sorry I was harsh. I'm sure you know more about this than I do.

it's oky to be harsh. it creates a lively discussion, and i do appreciate your thoughts. they give a good counterpoint and that's good to give. so thanks!

And I meant "SIRI" not "SIR" My fingers aren't working well tonight.
Posted by gallian | April 21, 2008 9:10 PM
ah... it's possible i might be wrong about POT. but, i'm very glad i was right about SIRI.

Despite the sell off Weds and Thurs (I would have been better off in SIRI during those days har har) have you now become one of the converted to POT, Ahknaten?
