Farewell to SLO Season One

"Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated"
Confucius

I wasn't really going to write any final messages here but given that I spent the last five months sharing my thoughts and experiences, I thought that it would be unfair not to do so during the last day of this contest.

First, I wanted to repeat that I am very happy with how well my portfolio performed, and how enjoyable the whole experience has been for me so far. Secondly, I wanted to quickly eliminate the confusion that might have arisen when some of the frequent visitors (Don Ferk :)) quickly glanced at the Top 5 leaderboard from yesterday, and did not find Dishwasher's name on it- it is purely a one day glitch :). ARRS/CCBL merger corporate action has not been adjusted yet and thus my portfolio is missing roughly $110k in gains which would put me right back in the number 3 spot for yesterday :)

I can't stress enough the fact, that I feel to have been very fortunate to be able to share my investing knowledge and ideas here at SLO during the last 5 months. And given all the positive feedback that I received from many of you, hopefully I've done it well. As a quick glance at the Top 50 blog posts of the contest indicates, I tried to put a lot of time, energy, thought and effort into all of my posts and have been rewarded with your votes.

In addition to blogging successes- my fund is also the only fund in the SLO that has been in the Top 5 almost during the entire contest. It is also interesting to note, that even if I did not make any trades after the first day and simply held my initial positions all the way to the end, my fund would have returned over 16.4%, which would have likely put my portfolio all the way into the Top 10-12 compliant funds of the entire contest. That proves that it is not only my good stock picking or trading skills, but rather my whole fundamental investment strategy is what allows even my pure "buy and hold" selection to deliver superior returns.

To sum it up, I truly believe that I have proved my ability to deliver great returns, write well, use a consistent investment strategy, and that I do deserve to win. But while I believe that my case is very compelling, it will certainly be up to the judges to decide who would be given this unique opportunity to be featured on the MSN's Strategy Lab panel in February.

Once again, I enjoyed competing against all of you a great deal, and to finish off here is the repeat of two paragraphs from one of my previous posts that sums my attitude for the entire SLO contest:

"My personal thanks goes to many of you whose posts I enjoyed reading- the "Wildman of SLO"- Don Ferk, the "Sub Prime" king- Andrew Carlson, the "Shorting Maniac"- Jon Coyle, the "IT Slave Driver" Keith Barton, the "Mac Guy" Jeff Kalnitz, the "Trustee" Eileen Teska, the "TA Guru" Kevin Wilde, the "Man of Few Words" Kai Pettanen, the "Always Drunk Realtor" Duffbeer, the "Sailor Mate" Magickniner, the "Cut to the Chase and drop your BS" Gullapali and the "Man of convictions"- Tom Armistead and many others...
Many of you are not in the Top 10 today but as I said before- the cycle right now might not favor your style- but it does not mean that you do not deserve to be a finalist as far as I am concerned. I don't know if Ken, Mark and Co agree but who knows- this is not supposed to be a shoot for the "stars" (or should I say "Sun" :) ) contest so you never know how it will end up :) "

Please stay safe, have many cheers and a Happy New Year,
Vad

Here's 2 Farewell songs by Bob Dylan

Farewell

Oh it's fare thee well my darlin' true,
I'm leavin' in the first hour of the morn.
I'm bound off for the bay of Mexico
Or maybe the coast of Californ.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.

Oh the weather is against me and the wind blows hard
And the rain she's a-turnin' into hail.
I still might strike it lucky on a highway goin' west,
Though I'm travelin' on a path beaten trail.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.

I will write you a letter from time to time,
As I'm ramblin' you can travel with me too.
With my head, my heart and my hands, my love,
I will send what I learn back home to you.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.

I will tell you of the laughter and of troubles,
Be them somebody else's or my own.
With my hands in my pockets and my coat collar high,
I will travel unnoticed and unknown.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.

I've heard tell of a town where I might as well be bound,
It's down around the old Mexican plains.
They say that the people are all friendly there
And all they ask of you is your name.
So it's fare thee well my own true love,
We'll meet another day, another time.
It ain't the leavin'
That's a-grievin' me
But my true love who's bound to stay behind.

Farewell Angelina
The bells of the crown
Are being stolen by bandits
I must follow the sound
The triangle tingles
And the trumpet play slow
Farewell Angelina
The sky is on fire
And I must go.

There's no need for anger
There's no need for blame
There's nothing to prove
Ev'rything's still the same
Just a table standing empty
By the edge of the sea
Farewell Angelina
The sky is trembling
And I must leave.

The jacks and queens
Have forsaked the courtyard
Fifty-two gypsies
Now file past the guards
In the space where the deuce
And the ace once ran wild
Farewell Angelina
The sky is folding
I'll see you in a while.

See the cross-eyed pirates sitting
Perched in the sun
Shooting tin cans
With a sawed-off shotgun
And the neighbors they clap
And they cheer with each blast
Farewell Angelina
The sky's changing color
And I must leave fast.

King Kong, little elves
On the rooftoops they dance
Valentino-type tangos
While the make-up man's hands
Shut the eyes of the dead
Not to embarrass anyone
Farewell Angelina
The sky is embarrassed
And I must be gone.

The machine guns are roaring
The puppets heave rocks
The fiends nail time bombs
To the hands of the clocks
Call me any name you like
I will never deny it
Farewell Angelina
The sky is erupting
I must go where it's quiet.

Oh, Yeah ---- How's about some Cat Stevens

Father & Son

It's not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Son
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
It's always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

Father
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
if you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.

Son
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
It's hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.

gullapalli, I have been actually considering opening my own small hedge fund sometime in 2008 and may be even a newsletter...Don't know the timing quite yet but I'll get there :)

Thanks for your kind words,
Vad

Vad =
a newsLetter?
Can I write articles for it.
I've already got one ready.

I got the Idea from a SLO Player - whom out of courtesy I will not mention - catchy title, too.

" The Penny Stock That I Would Buy a Million Dollars Worth Of "

I think it fits in with your style PRO-file.

so, wutduhya say ? Am I on ?

PS :

The FareWell Angelina Song is about Gambling & Poker - Angelina -Aces / King - Kong / 52 Gypsies / "folding", Catch my Drift. It was in Answer to Townes Van Zandt ( The Texas Troubadour ) - Mr Gold & Mr. Mud.

If your GOLD - my name is MUD.

DON"T PLAY POKER WITH A WARRIOR IN LV. YOU"VE BEEN WARNED

The wicked king of clubs awoke
it was to his queen turned
his lips were laughing as they spoke
his eyes like bullets burned
the sun's upon a gambling day
his queen smiled low and blissfully
let's make some wretched fool to play
plain it was she did agree
He send his deuce down into diamond
his four to hart, and his trey to spade
three kings with their legions come
preparations soon where made
they voted club the days commander
gave him an army face and number
all but the outlaw jack of diamonds
and the aces in the sky
He give his sevens first instructions
spirit me a game of stud
stakes unscarred by limitation
'tween a man named Gold and man named Mud
Club filled Gold with greedy vapors
'til his long, green eyes did glow
Mud was left with the sighs and trembles
watching his hard earned money go
Flushes fell on Gold like water
tens they paired and paired again
but the aces only flew through heaven
and the diamond jack called no man friend
The diamond queen saw Muds ordeal
began to think of her long lost son
fell to her knees with a mother's mercy
prayed to the angels every one
The diamond queen, she prayed and prayed
and the diamond angel filled Muds hole
the wicked king of clubs himself
fell in face down in front of Gold
now three kings come to Clubs command
but the angels from the sky did ride
three kings up on the streets of Gold
three fireballs on the muddy side
The club queen heard her husband's call
but Lord that queen of diamond's joy
when the outlaw in the heavenly hall
turned out to be a wandering boy
Now Mud he checked and Gold bet all
and Mud he raised and Gold did call
and the smile just melted off his face
when Mud turned over that diamond ace
Now here's what this story's told
if you feel like Mud you'll end up Gold
if you feel like lost, you'll end up found
so amigo, lay them raises down

Townes Van Zandt Mr Gold And Mr Mud lyrics

Vad,

I think you will be turning pro sometime soon. You have a pleasant, low key blogging style that wears well: also, you have ideas that work and are worth communicating.

I wondered when we started if the winner would be someone with a style that was bound to crash and burn, but from your selections and from how you describe your thought process I think you will be able to replicate your results in the big time.

Congratulations and good luck,

Tom

Vad , When you go Pro , you still will need some help and
I know just where to find them. You are busy crunching ### and other analytical things but should you ever get stuck I promise to share my picks from DuffBeers bottom of the bottle or cans !!!!!
The best and it is really not luck.Let us know if we can sign up I have a dollar two eighty for you to play with !!!!old polish thing from my mom
Cheers ,DuffBeer

vad,
I got a dollar 2 98 and elebenty sebben Sense.
I could kick in a GrubStake for you if you promise not to play Roulette or Poker in LV.
Stick ti one-armed bandits - nickel slots.
More your SPEED.
Don ( aka VW Berserker ) Ferk-er

I will be surprised if the winner is neither you nor stocksshah. Both of you deserve it equally. BTW, i think that 2008 is too early for you to start your own hedge fund. It might be better to prove yourself in at least 2 more rounds before jumping into that risky venture. If you are as successful in the next rounds as you are in this round, then you will get a lot of referrals from folks here. You may get a few partners too (like me) :) .
