Did anyone notice ??????

Hi to all SLO contestants, how are we all feeling today ????
WOW what happened ?????
I just woke up from having some real bad beer. No I was not in a drunken stupor ,
I am a sensible responsible drinker. I think it was a new product from those
two merging breweries . My wife bought it for me as a present! She said
" honey you deserve this,I am sure you will like it."
The market was pretty choppy when I started
my sampling. Then I passed out and when I awoke
all I saw was red going across the screen.

Can someone out there explain what happened ????
Is this all over Rush Limbaugh disbanding Operation Chaos ????
If so Hillary come back NOW , get back into the chase.
It seems to me when she when she had her crown taken away
and gave it to that Barrack guy Mr Market did not like that.
We have been going down like one of Armin's old tanker ships.
Did any one out there notice that too ????

I have lost my shorts but if you kept some in your closet
you may see that they are the proper attire for the month of May !
It is May or what month is it ???????

I have a plan to stop the falling
Please Hillary come back and it is ok to make Bill VP.
or
We all will be going back to some real drinking !!!!!
I have to go running out to get some Alka Seltzer.
No not because of the stock market or bad beer ----
I actually put a real estate deal together, now will it
stay together ???? sure hope so.

It is the crosstown weekend here in Chicago and we got our @#$%^
kick last weekend so it is pay back time.

Cheers, DuffBeer

Where have I been ????

Hi to all I hope everyone is in good health !!! It cost a lot if you do get sick.
I am fine but the profession that I make the real money to pay the real bills
is very very sick " real estate". You all have been there work work work and
still things do not work out. I feel like Edison in his workshop finding out
for the um timth time the light bulb does not lite. This actually happens in
all work places at one time or another. My motto "show up to work
something good could happen."
Enough of the serious stuff , here is what happen.
I signed up for SLO 2 and thought I would keep the SLO1 portfolio
which was set up as a tech sector mutual fund featuring mobile devices.
I never received my start over SLO 2 portfolio so with the market collapse
to the very bottom I went. I around NAV 7.75 or lower and I said #$%^
I better reconsider doing this for a living. !!!!!!!
I wanted to leave that portfolio for an experiment and set up the new one
in a very different way. I wanted to try what our fisherman KB was doing with shorts.
Way does KB need shorts anyway he is always in the middle of some cold river and
he doesn't catch anything. so he never has to come out !!!

Most of you l know I am a reader of investment sites ,blogs and IBD but they do not
have enough pictures for me so what does DuffBeer do to find his stocks ?
I am a taster of fine craft beer- bottle, can or draft. I will search them out.
Why because my ideas come form the bottom of all those empties.
My climb out of the gutter was because I started not only drinking those beers
but reading the labels.
I traded like that drunken sailor Armin(shipping) and the way ward villain
Viking Warrior Don ( minerals). I stole from the Gold Queen shining Becky (gold).
Russ and Tom said Duff your way to aggressive try some old time
favorites and let them pay you (at&t & divi's). What are fiends for they got the drunken
Realtor out of the gutter. They could not leave me there I owed them all money !!!!

While drinking my beer and I do not spill it on the key board like VW has done.
I should patent a keyboard with beer bottle holders for him. Here are the sites
I visit often.
Noteable call -- seeking alpha ---- navallier ---- yahoo finance ( fancy word for me!!!)
MSN money (i once had some ) ------ market watch ----- fund my mutual fund
--- zach stocks -- IBD ( a very good source)
Sure I had some good ideas but I own my spot on the front page because of two reasons.
I learned to sell take what you can and put it to work somewhere else.
Taking a loss is part of making money. My SLO 1 friends Tom, Armin , Russ, Becky, KB,
Eileen and it pains me to say I even learned something from VAD and VW !!!!! I still am
better looking they are . With mug shot like they have they should be locked up
and throw away the key .LOL
Thanks to all of you !!!!!! I am thirsty and guess what is the only thing I have in the frig ?
Cheers, DuffBeer

DuffBeer's Real Estate lesson

Hi to all !!!
I am back , but before I post about stocks I thought I would
comment about the real estate market .
I walk the streets incognito aka DuffBeer but really I am just Dave Bigos
Be careful opening this link it is a scary sight to see !!!!!! you were warned if
you have nightmares or an upset stomach .
http://www.davebigos.illinoisproperty.com/remaxil/index.asp?acc=31535
I am still better looking then Viking Warrior & Vad our SLO 1 friends !
But not as handsome as Russ or Tom nor as pretty as our gold queen Becky.
My phone is always open to my SLO1 &2 friends. I will share my ideas , thoughts
and answer your questions.

I am in Chicago , but the real estate markets across the country are similar----
sad ,bad and rather dismal. Yes some selling is happening, but not like it was before.
Retail prices are out and wholesale prices are working.

The key word in real estate is Patience --- you do not trade these back in like cars !!!!! One must avoid a mistake for it is very costly and you will hear about it often from the one that did not want it.
Another bit of advice-- the lady buys the house guys that do almost always screw up. Be there but tune into the homes fundamentals a/c ,heat, plumbing, roofs ,structural and that boring but very costly stuff.
Keep her happy and when you find it -you both will know.

I always tell buyers to keep the emotions hid thank the sellers but do not flower it up unless you would not consider it for purchase.Keep your power of negotiation strong to your side. Your agent will dislike this but too bad. It is your money.
I am a very different r/e agent as you can already tell .
As far as r/e blogs check this out , you my already know
http://seekingalpha.com/
far left > US markets > housing
My favorite Barry Ritholtz be careful of NAR's numbers

Bottoms a very good subject !!!!! catching one is tuff , when was it every easy?

Rather then that I suggest
1) get pre approved not just qualified this is powerful ,it means you can close
2)search out where you want to live ,choose 2 or 3 choices
drive around those areas and get to feel it , hear it and see if it is home
3) the deal ??? you will pay more for a home then a house
buy a home she will be much happier and so will you
4) go for whole sale ,incredible prices???? I still do not see them except on cable tv
and ads for buying lists on the radio
5) as you tour your areas you will get a feel for asking prices, real sale
closed figures are harder to find. Ask you agent for a list or visit the
tax office. While at the tax office do not be free with info on a home you
want to buy, just get your info and get the heck out of there
6) when your lady has choose the home you should switch your thought process
from buyer to seller . asking 100000 -I'll offer 70 = teed off seller
You want to play ,keep the seller talking and you will still save money.
so you put on your seller cap and think what if I get an offer at 70 what do you do
how about -80 ??? keep the seller in your process you will be more successful.
7) like stocks there are others if you miss one ,I realize it can hurt but most
of the time you will find a home you will like better and at a lower price
8) The world of mortgage financing is nuttier the following the price of oil.
Buyers get your credit in order. Now they want you to pay your bills and
get this have a real down payment. VW and I remember this from way back when.

Need some help or want to run something by me , just give me a call
Cheers, DuffBeer

This is so easy !!!!!!

Where do you get your ideas for stock investments ???
Most of you from SLO 1 are very familiar with my unique method
Of stock selection but before I explain mine I want to mention a few things
To the newbies on board. Armin the ships master will tell you all
" keep your floatation device on at all times."
Hi to my old friends we are at it again !!!!!! Think the new recruits will
Listen to Armin,,nah they will be as goofy as we were but they will find
Out when we put out to sea.
I have been reading some blogs yes I did graduate from college--
beer college!!!
Hey newbies " enter your biographies " I think it is at the blog site top right .
Toro knows this answer she knows most things around here
And if she does not Eileen sure does (sorry for that Packer loss)

Oh about selection, where do you get yours ?--- paid advisor services ,web
bloggers, hairdressers, business publications, overhear discussions as you can
see they come from many places. Which one got the winners !!!!
You will be surprised when you star checking each others portfolios
You will see no two are alike !!!!! We succeed or regress in all different ways.

My picks do not come from fancy screens, confusing charts, analytical or
Mathematical analysis ( stole this all from Tom & Russ two real smart guys )
Or spreadsheets ???
NO NO my approach is mix fun with making some money. With a handle like
DuffBeer, where would you think I get my best picks ? I look at all that confusing
Stuff and I just get more confused, "what's DuffBeer to do !"
Well ,here is the secret Vad is using it too I should get a royalty check .
It is hard work but I suffer through it. Old DuffBeer gets his picks from the bottom of
empty beer cans and bottles he drinks. So I am always searching and tasting crafted
micro brews responsibly to find my next profitable stock pick. I know Russ and Becky
drink that stuff made from crushed grapes--I guess that works too.
Which ever your method I hope it works well. Have have learning ,sharing
and creating new friendships.
Hi to my old friends the best to you !!!!!!
Gosh I am so thirsty ,I hope I have a beer in the frig ?????

Cheers,DuffBeet

Hi to my fellow old friends & you newbies too !!!

So you want to learn something

A wise seasoned investor once told me " moron haven't you been listening "
"Haven' t I taught you anything "
Wise words from my Warrior friend , he has shared and taught us in
SLO 1 many a lesson . Welcome to SLO # 2 class is in session !!!!!

????? --- Is selling more important then buying ??? What do you think ?
Do not believe it is think of January 2008 . KB our resident professional
Fly fishermen has posted on this subject, it is a tuff thing to do.
This will not be an easy six months. Do not think of it as play $$$ --
You are supposed to be running a mutual fund that has Grandma's,
Uncle's , friends, children's and your very own dollars in it !!!!
This contest is about preservation and growing capital .

Next post where does DuffBeer get his picks from !!!!!!
Some of you vets already know ,
Can you believe it Vad is now using it ........

Thanks to all of you

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas ,we certainly did.
Young Duff came to Chi town for a few days . Tom I know how you felt
about your dad teaching you things. I always do the same with my son
Marc. Funny thing he now teaches me all those crazy tech stuff.
We really do learn from one another.

That brings me to thank all of you who shared your ideas in your
posts. We all have gain precious knowledge we will use for a lifetime.
Now as for DuffBeer's post , my aim was to add humor and show a
lighter side of on tuff days. I wanted you all to smile or chuckle or
even say that goofy DuffBeer. Laughter is good it is healthy
and you look better when you smile !!!! I was on stage and all of you
were my audience. You all got free tickets ,I should have brought
more beer, you would have gotten one too.

Dishwasher thanks for your lessons and I certainly hope there
will be more. Shash ,Shao and Gullapalli our stock surgeons
always fixing their portfolios, wish they had fixed mine nah
I had fun finding my picks at the bottom of those micro
beer cans. Keith's fishing lessons and his daring short moves.
Eileen and Toro posting their research and news. Tom and Russ
sharing a possible stock pick. How could I miss our most creative writer
Viking Warrior drove me to drink , once I had a beer or two DuffBeer
could real understand him. I would say we are a motley darn good bunch.

Krish wrote a pretty long blog, I guess it was her PHD.paper.
Believe or not Duff did go to beer college. She summarized the entire
SLO contest !!!! She mention somethings that I recently found
in some old empty beer bottles.
You always must be a stock picker --- in the correct sector ---
at the precise time.
That hard to do but those that can, always have the big boat
in the harbor.
I will put this in Duff's words --- There is a lot of beer out there most
of it bad. When you find one of those craft beer gems or if you
are Russ a Merlot can you imagine Duff with one of those ????
I take that brew and put it in the sector on my side of the frig.
Once it is cooled ,at the precise time I run for my beer
can opener. Now if you are Russ you walk to the drawer and pull
out some kind of fancy cork gadget remover. By the time Russ gets to
that wine I have a great pour and and already tasted that great
gem of a micro brew. Oh as for risk ,I just might have a beer overflow
but not this Duff that will not happened. The reward is a great tasty
beer to toast picking the correct stock in the correct sector at the
correct time.
Russ did you get that cork out yet ??? I bet VW can certainly help you.
DuffBeer's club got it's 2nd member would you believe it is Gullapalli.
He shot me a few recommendations ,could this craft beer be why
he is in the top 5. Oh the 1st member VW with his strong
Norwegian wee heavy stout.

Happy New year to all my SLO friends " please remember our troops"
Cheer, DuffBeer

Crying in my EggNog

Just kidding ! Monday 's stock market crushed my fund (-3.46,) I fell like a old Santa bringing me a load of now valuable coal. I wish it were good tasty crafted micro beer then at least I could have had one. Now about that coal as Viking Warrior has said it has alot of upside if I sell it to China !!!

Hipp Hip Uray !!! I closed a Real Estate deal Monday !!!!! It was the 6th contract and has taken two long years. Many think it is easy this r/e gig ,believe it is not. Just look down your street and see old those signs. Maybe the sellers should put lights on them. Did DuffBeer come up with another great idea ?

How about our leaders blogging along, Dishwashers got that crystal ball working predicting the
future !!!! How about Stocksshah rising to the top of the SLO kingdom and then there is SHAO with his short direct scripts. As good as they are, there are a few right on their tail. I hope all of you have benefit from them, I know that old DuffBeer sure has too.

I have choose to run a sector fund and not be a trader. What I found out this is diffficult to do sticking to your plan ,you also must be ready to sell some of your fund. Success can happen but the road is rather bumpy. A big thing I learned is we all went in different directions toward ones goal, I hope you all reached I working on mine.

I have ??? young Duff Beer posed to me ,"should I stick with mutual funds or would it be better
that I consider these ETF's
I now pose this to all of you my fellow SLO experts ," what shall I tell youn Duff what to do"

I can tell a good thing about this bright young man , he now buys a round of those tasty brewed beers for his dad -----mr DuffBeer !!!

Merry Christmas to all and please remember our troops

I have had alot of fun !!!!!

To all my new friends I wish you good cheer, good health and many belly hurting laughs.
I hope my posts of my humorous investment ways have given you one or two. It is true that I drink but really it 's just a couple and not even every day. Many times I do pour one down while I read your messages ,posts or detail stories. I keep that full glass away from the key board unlike the Viking who did manage to drown one !!!
Seriously friends I have learned alot , you all have helped the Duff's make a couple of real type bucks. We are a bit closers to our top goal, moving near Denver it is our favorite getaway place.
Young Duff's out there busy fixing networks at hospitals that help keep people alive. It is above me what that kid real does those tech guys and VW talk funny at times and are hard to understand, they get old DuffBeer's head to spinning round and round.

I tip my hat along with a beer a big hip hip to Ken Kam for keeping me around. I was up with the big boys # 47 for a day then came that big sub prime crash . That big noise you heard was Duff falling down as Eileen just watch me drop and Russ gave me a nice wave goodby. I landed by somebody that goes by LA. I knew a guy named DuffBeer would not be welcome here.
I made some adjustments added some "Apples", "Expres Scripts" needed some drugs, "Shanda " for playing those games, purchased moe RIMM just before the fall, then added a"BIDU" check out their site makes you think you have been drinking to long, I always read Shao & Shah they guys in the know and got into solar JASO.
I went daring but something to see is that Dishwasher he solidly at # 3 !!!!!!!!

Merry Christmas my friends , may peace be with you all and also our troops .
Cheers, DuffBeer

The town was buzzing

Think of this ,some of God's and Mother Nature most beautiful creations just to the west of you (mountains not Corr's)
the Rockies headed to the World Series !!! and you are surrounded by beverages made from Barley, Hops , Wheat and WhatEver !!!!! sounds like a legal firm or the CSU front defensive line
That was Denver and the DuffBeer family was smack dab in the middle of it. Fun no it was terrific.
I must admit that I did get some great stock buying ideas as we were tasting many a great brew but I could not remember them . Wonder why ??? could it be because ----
there was 408 breweries in the fest ???? -- 1884 beers on the floor to taste ????? -- ---
2793 beers in the competition ???? ( I am going to be a real judge next year )
DuffBeer and family were feeling right at home . We even took in a few of the food pairing seminars , a bold stout beer with a cajun season pork roast is as tasty as the proper wine paired with the saute'd guinea hen.
Mrs DuffBeer coned us into attending ,the get this ,Chocolate and beer pairing seminar. DuffBeer jr and I thought ok one for mom but guess what it was beyond a hit it was a grand slam. Chocolate deserts out of this world and great brews who needs meet ??? try it ,you will love it. We continue to talk about that session everytime we see chocolate .

Who previously said -----

"Watch out when the banks report." Was our fellow SLO member correct !!!!!!
Being a Realtor, I saw this coming along time ago. People were given loans
that I could not believe how did they get them. Now we know those answers
and more." What a fine mess you've gotten us into this time. " Hardy always said that to Oliver.
Guess I dated myself. Well I am old fashion in many ways and I believed in having money down.
The buyers had NO risk in these real estate deals then and still do not today. Why because
they had bad credit then and have worst now. They got a hand out then and are now looking
for another one. How many of you would have liked to get the hand out the banks are
looking for. I am just hoping for a closing. I am not one of those mega teams or mega producers
their only thoughts were numbers at any cost. People I helped buy a home were friends
or became friends. I prided myself to the golden rule and will continue to hold that my life's value.
Sad that greed once again has marred the financial world again . I know it is asking a lot that
these events do not happen again, we all know the real truth of what will happen.
I am saddened that it was my industry that has brought so many sad faces and
emptied your portfolios. I hope one of these days it will be my industry that will make you a few bucks.
Don't let your sons and daughters grow up to be Realtors ,let them be Bilingual in computers.
The DuffBeer is still good and I encourage you to try one for your self.
Cheers,

Sports and Earnings Reports???

How are they similar ?
The winning team members and coaches can not get to the press room fast enough. The losing team members and coaches do not want to see anything that looks like a micro recorder. You hear reasons for the win and excuses for the loss. What will we be hearing when the earnings reports start to pile out of the locker room ?

I am not a technical writer nor a CPA but I can break down the numbers.I will be looking for companies with a good solid ground game and the ability for long aerial strikes.
I do not want to see teams breaking down or with losing records . Are there similarities I think so.
There is great feeling being on winning teams and a sense of discomfort when on the other side . I am sure you will agree.

This coming week Alcoa comes out of the tunnel first and many more there after. Will we be cheering or jeering ? We also have the release of the minutes from the Fed meeting of September 18 it might make the top ten list. Thursday the 11th the international trade report comes out and the Rockies open up the NLCS against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Then Friday the pencil pushers bring out the PPI producer price index, retail sales numbers and business inventories. Will the week be eventful you bet , I just hope it is profitable .

DuffBeer has decided to take the advice and pop a cold one on the SLO. It will not however be in Chicago . I will be on assignment in Denver with my wonderful wife Mrs DuffBeer and my son DuffBeer jr . We have volunteered for difficult task of attending the GABF . To look important I have given myself the title of PBT . I will take my new title very seriously as I do all parts of life. Please I am counting on all of you to keep those SLO portfolios rising in value in my absence.

It is time to start preparing for this upcoming weekend. To do so I cannot think of a better way then to have that cold one of DuffBeer.
Oh --- GABF ?? PBT ??? no they are not stock symbols !
they stand for ----------
" Great American Beer Fest " and "Professional Beer Taster"
Cheers, DuffBeer

Thinking Ahead

Since we all have other lives and jobs reading every posting is difficult. I am grateful
to all who have posted . I find them insightful , informative and full of energy. Your excitement comes through your writings.

We all have been busy explaining why we buy or sell a position. Many shared what strategies
would be used for the contest. Some even mention comments about their own holdings. This information passed back and forth has helped me obtain a highly profitable SLO fund and aided my personal holdings.

I am not much for the technical writing so I try to bring some humor in when I post. I hope it makes you chuckle . I am in real estate and laughs are hard to find right now . When I saw the subprime mortgages start up I did think that it was going to be no joke. Iknew the results were not going to be funny and there are not.

I do have a question to all of you that I have been thinking about. What are you planning to do with your investments with the up coming 2008 election ??? I have been going through if this happens I will do that and so on. I would loved to hear some your thoughts on this soon to be here event.
Back to the present and my SLO portfolio. Once again just as I get the urge to sell or lighten up on some issues ,boom they hit like a Sockeye Salmon on a light fly rod. I know I should keep my discipline , lock those profits and look to other opportunities which are out there. Taking this momentum ride has been exciting ,I am keeping an eye out on the fuel gauge.

Speaking of fuel gauge , mine is on empty !!! I better go get some of that super duper additive called
DuffBeer. It provides me with a lot of get up and go!!!!

Coulda - Shoulda - Woulda ????

How many times have we made a change only to find we should have gone with our intuition.
Statistics past, present and situational are important and should be taken into consideration
when making a decision . But what about your feelings, thoughts and evaluations ? BlueskyMack
points this out about performance comparing MasterCharge to baseball .
Coaching football for 16 years I can see this. You know your go to players in certain
situations. The ones you could count on. The performers who loved a challenge, craved the
pressure and had the strong desire to succeed. Can you think of your own personal
comparisons that you may have .

When picking your initial stock selections how many times did you change it ? I changed mine picks but then I kept clouding up things, and went back to my original 21 selections. I thought, lets run with these and adjust as we go.I think the problem we all have is we think to much. Personally I try to avoid paralyzing my decision making process ,for many it is difficult to do but for DuffBeer well I'll let you decide.

Now back to one of my favorite times of my life.Decisions do require the thought process but they also include performance . Many times we would find our team behind , late in the game with little time on the clock yet in position to score and win . Time out was usually calledI would enter the huddle and see the anxiousness on those 11 players faces and I'd say " pretty exciting game " they would calm down then get whooped up. They would be waiting for me to call the play but I would ask " what play do you want to run ? " I always knew who would step up and take command. They showed confidence, courage and desire to succeed and help the team.
All of us in this SLO contest have the desire to succeed. It is the courage to pick a stock and stick with it that tuff. Ken Kam has formed a great bunch of team members. I am glad to be on it .
I review my fund picks often and continue to see them improve their performance. Sure they will changes but I have confidence in those picks and so far so good. Will I change sure isn't change the one constant in life we know will happen .

Oh did we always score and win, most of the time but there was something more important to get across to these young men. Play as a unit,a team and not individuals . They accomplished great things as team and reached goals their could never obtain doing it themselves.

Today I am fortunate to have sold them their first home ,see them with their families or talk about that goal line play over a cold DuffBeer. Coaching is not all about winning it is about turning boys into successful young men.

Stick with your gut feelings, I bet you will be right most of the time.'
Cheers, DuffBeer

Up, Up, and Away

How did I pick my 21 stocks for the fund? Yes, I do use the Duff Beer can method, but not all is found at the bottom of those cans.

Rating myself knowledgeable but no where near the level most of you who use technical analysis in your decision making process. I am a gatherer of ideas, information, and trends. Something just catches my eye or perks my ears, then I go to work searching for additional data, confirming it and using what common sense I have to make a buy or sell decision.

Sites I visit for information are Marketocracy IBD, Clear Station, MSN money, Yahoo, Seeking Alpha and more. I listen to Bloomberg, CNBC, World CNBC, and WBBM 780 Noonhour.

Many of you use much more sophisticated methods to find your stocks worthy of purchase or sale. As for me I just keep gathering information. I also use the President Reagan method, "Trust but Verify".

I guess I am a sponge. It seems to be working well. SLO blogs have been a terrific place to gain knowledge .I never get tired of reading your are postings. Thanks for sharing !!!!!

Well, time to go back to another well tested and proven stock picking method - checking what I find at the bottom of a Duff Beer can.

I'll let you know the results later.

Cheers,
