The common concensus is that Roth is better than traditional. The reason(s)? Because Roth IRA/401K invest with after-tax money, if you expect your tax rate when retired to be higher than now, you should use Roth IRA/401K plan. But doesn't this only apply to the small number of wealthy group whose tax rate will be higher in the future when large lump sum of retirement fund is withdrawed? Today's Suzy Oman show pointed out one more advantage of Roth plan: If one needs to withdraw money from the plan prematurely, since Roth IRA/401K is already taxed, there won't be an issue of double taxing (when borrowing from traditional plan, when loans are repaid, it needs to be paid back using after tax money, hence the loan will be taxed twice when the money is eventually withdrawed at retirement).
