Stock Market Game -- Part 1

Twice a year The Foundation for Investor Education holds a Stock Market Game for students across the country. The students open portfolios on-line and can invest in a $100,000 simulated portfolio. They have 2 goals over the 10 week competition: 1 - beat the S&P 500 and 2- of course beat all the other schools that have entered. For several years I've mentored the Senior Economics class at my daughter's Alma Mater - Charlotte Latin. Mr. Gregory the instructor breaks the class up in teams of 3 and they are in charge of their own portfolios.

I spend some time exposing the class to all the free websites that they can use to research stocks, we meet in the Library's computer lab to make trades and at the end of the 10 weeks each team makes a report on how they did and what they learned. I also give them a homework assignment to complete with their parents. I ask them to watch Jim Cramer's Mad Money and also Fast Money with their parents. They are to discuss as a family if they think the shows are valid investment advice that could be followed or just a form of "reality show" and just pure entertainment. Boy do we have a lot of diverse opinions on that assignment.

I try to pick my own portfolio but instead of trading, I buy and hold for the entire 10 week period. Over the next 10 weeks I'll write a series of posts to tell you how the students are doing and how my portfolio is progressing.

Here are my first 3 picks and my reasons for including them in my portfolio:

Whole Foods Markets (WFMI)
Technical Analysis:
1 - 100% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 3 new highs and up 12.62% in the last month

2 - Sales projected to increase by 11.90% this year and 11.60% next year
3 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 24.50% this year, 14.60% next year and 18.18% annually for the next 5 years

Investor Sentiment on Motley Fool

1 - CAPS members vote 3,713 to 575 to beat the market
2 - All Stars vote 1,233 to 105 to beat the market

AON's integrations begins to pay off

Today I added AON Corp (AON) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio for very positive price trends.

Aon Corporation is a holding company whose operating subsidiaries carry on business in three distinct segments: insurance brokerage and other services; consulting; and insurance underwriting. The Insurance Brokerage and Other Services segment consists of its retail and reinsurance brokerage operations. The Consulting segment provides consulting services including employee benefits, human resources, and change management. Its Insurance Underwriting segment sells life and accident and health insurance, extended warranty, specialty and other insurance products.

Recent Press Release : "The integration of Aon Hewitt is well underway and client reaction has been exceptional," said Greg Case, president and CEO. "Cost savings related to our restructuring programs and operational initiatives are expected to drive significant margin improvement, and our strong cash flow generation provides financial flexibility as demonstrated by the repurchase of $150 million of Aon stock in the quarter."

Technical Analysis: Recently the stock has been on a tear with 16 new highs and a price appreciation of 13.06% in the last month. That price trend and a risings Relative Strength Index of 81.31% has earned the stock a 100% Barchart technical buy signal. The stock trades around 49.62 which is well above its 50 day moving average of 45.10.

Fundamental Analysis: Wall Street brokerages have published 9 buy and 7 hold recommendations for their clients based on projections for increased revenues and earnings. Revenues are expected to increase by 10.00% this year and 25.70% next year. Earnings are estimated to increase by 12.10% this year and continue by an increase of 6.00% annually for the next 5 years.

Investor Sentiment: Over on Motley Fool the CAPS members vote 113 to 19 that the stock will beat the market with the All Stars in agreement by a vote of 44 to 3.

Fool notes that the last 9 articles by Wall Street journalist have all been positive.

In my view the stock has all 3 burners flaming: 1- Recent and consistent positive price appreciation, 2 - Wall Street brokerage analysts endorsement based on a consensus of increases in revenue and earnings, and 3- A wide and positive general investor following.

Put this on on your watch lists.

Profits in the Packaging and container sector

This morning I added Graphic Packaging (GPK) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio. I found it while screening on Barchart for those companies hitting the most frequent new highs. The company is in the Packaging and Container sector and the whole sector should benefit as the world wide economy gets back on track.

GPK is a leading provider of paperboard packaging solutions for a wide variety of products to food, beverage and other consumer products companies. Graphic Packaging's customers include some of the most widely recognized companies in the world.

The factors I considered in the pick are:

1 - 96% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - 16 new highs and up 23.46% in the last month
3 - Relative Strength Index is 72.55% and climbing
4 - Trades around 4.99 with a 50 day moving average of 4.17
5 - Wall Street analysts have 3 strong buy recommendations based on hope of increased sales and earnings
6- Sales are expected to increase by 2.90% next year
7 - Earning are estimated to increase by 466.70% this year , 64.70% next years and 8.00% annually for the next 5 years
8 - Investor sentiment is positive with the CAPS members of Motley Fool voting 55 to 15 that the stock will beat the market and the All Stars in agreement 31 to 7

I chose GPK based on its recent price momentum but there are 2 other companies in the P&C sector you might want to consider.

BLL -- Ball is a a manufacturer of metal and plastic packaging, primarily for beverages and foods, and a supplier of aerospace and other technologies and services to commercial and governmental customers.

Factors to consider:
1 - 100% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - 9 new highs and up 6.60% in the last month
3 - Relative Strength Index 65.80% and rising
4 - Trades around 73.47 with a 50 day moving average of 96.15
5 - Wall Street brokerages have 7 buy and 4 hold recommendations published
6 - Sales are projected to increase by 12.60% this year and 3.10% next year
7 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 16.70% this year, 11.80% next year and 9.67% annually for the next 5 years
8 - Investor sentiment on Motley Fool is high with the CAPS members voting 219 to 12 that the stock will beat the market and the All Stars agree 86 to 2

ATR -- Aptargroup Inc. is a leader in the design, manufacture and sale of three categories of consumer product dispensing systems: pumps, closures and aerosol valves. The company focuses on providing value-added dispensing systems to global consumer product marketers in the personal care, fragrance/cosmetics, pharmaceutical, household/industrial products and food industries. Value-added packaging allows consumers to conveniently dispense a product, in an aesthetically attractive package, which consistently meets required usage or dosage characteristics.

The factors to consider on ATR are:
1 - 32% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - 3 new highs and up 1.10% in the last month
3 - Relative Strength Index is 55.53%
4 - Trades around 48.85 with a 50 day moving average of 47.48
5 - Wall Street brokerages have 3 buy and 6 hold recommendations published
6 - Sales are projected to increase 11.70% this year and 5.30% next year
7 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 34.40% this year, 8.80% next year and 11.42% annually for the next 5 years
8 - Investor sentiment is high with the CAPS members on Motley Fool voting 82 to 5 that the stock will beat the market and the All Stars agree 31 to 1

Any of these 3 stocks might be a good addition to your watch list but I think GPK has more factors in its favor.
