Smucker's - They put their name on the label

I've enjoyed the nice homey Norman Rockwell-like commercials about the 2 little Smucker boys walking through the orchard preparing themselves to one day take over Grandpa's jam operations. Well to my surprise the Co-CEO's are the little Smucker boys all grown up with Little Timmy as Chairman and Richard as President. Grampa's jam operations is
J M Smucker (SJM) now a 5 billion dollar operation.

The J.M. Smucker Company (SJM) , headquartered in Orrville, Ohio is the leading marketer of jams, jellies, preserves, and other fruit spreads in the U.S. They are also the leader in dessert toppings, natural peanut butter, and health and natural foods juice products, and market a wide variety of other specialty products throughout the U.S. and in many foreign countries. In the fruit spreads category, they also hold the leadership position in Australia and Canada.

Their product line-up sounds like my pantry. Besides Smucker's jams and jellies, there's Jif, Crisco, Folger's, Pillsbury, Eagle Brand, Hungry Jack and of course Martha White. Does that sound like your pantry too?

Besides taste, there's other reasons to buy this company.

Technical Factors:
1 - 100% Barchart technical buy signal2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 10 new highs and up 7.23% in the last month
4 - Relative Strength Index 70.32% and climbing
5 - Trades around 72.24 with a 50 day moving average of 65.50

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerages analysts have published 6 buy and 7 hold reports for their clients
2 - Sales are expected to increase by 4.20% this year and 5.20% next year
3 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 9.70% this year, 6.70% next years and continue by 6.50% for the next 5 years

Investor Sentiment:
1 - Good press has made this a popular company
2 - CAPS members of Motley Fool vote 427 to 21 that the stock will beat the market
3 - The All Stars agree with a vote of 150 to 5
4 - Fool notes the last 10 articles by Wall Street columnists have all been positive

A look in both my pantry and yours tells me that this is a company that will be around for a long, long time. The question is just how much money can they make? If it's good enough for your pantry it should be good enough for your portfolio.

Breeze-Eastern's price gets a lift

This morning I was screening on Barchart for stocks that continued to hit new highs all through the recent market gyrations and found Breeze-Eastern (BZC). It meet all my criteria to be added to the Barchart Van Meerten Speculative portfolio, which contains stock listed for under $10. The additional was based primarily on recent upward price momentum.

I've got a taste for Whole Foods

This morning I took a list of companies that have had double digit growth in both sales and earnings and are projected to have that double digit growth continue and ran them against the Barchart technical indicators and Whole Foods Markets (WFMI) come up on top of the list.

Whole Foods Market (WFMI) is the largest purveyor of natural foods in the world. They own and operate the country's largest chain of natural food supermarkets. They are like an old-fashioned neighborhood grocery store, an organic farmer's market, a European bakery, a New York deli, and a modern supermarket all rolled into one! The Company also offers a wide variety of non-perishable natural products on its Web site at http://wholefoods.com.

If you visit one of their stores, don't expect to find one of those hippy granola bar shops of the 70's or a Pumping Iron protein drink joint. There offer a lot of high end organic fresh food and even organic wine and beer. If you're going to drink, why not drink without guilt?

This isn't a small chain but has over 290 locations and is expected to gross over $10 billion in sales this year. Growth as measured in same store sales has been 8.7%. Recently during the recession some shoppers traded down but now as the economy loosens they are returning in droves.

Technical Factors:
1 - 100% Barchart technical buy signals
2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 4 new highs and up 2.39% in the last month
4 - Relative Strength Index is 68.43% and rising
5 - Trades around 14.40 with a 50 day moving average of 55.68

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerage analysts have issued 9 buy and 15 hold reports recently
2 - Sales are projected to increase by 12.30% this year and 11.80% next year
3 - Earnings are projected to increase by 26.40% this year, 14.40% next year and 16.74% for the next 5 years

Investor Sentiment:
1 - This stock has extremely high and positive general investor sentiment
2 - CAPS members on Motley Fool voted 3,752 to 573 that the stock will beat the market
3 - The more experienced All Stars agree with a 1,253 to 106 vote
4 - Fool notes that the last 8 Wall Street columnists reports have been positive including a recent 2/10 recommendation by Zacks

In the US shoppers are now looking at quality as well as price. I've bought some of their products and will return. Put this one on your watch lists.

Growth in senior living facilities

I know senior living facilities will be a growth industry in the future but I added

The Company currently owns interests in and/or operates 77 communities with a capacity of approximately 11,000 residents, including 15 communities that it manages for third parties. The Company also operates one home health care agency. Annual sales are over $211 million dollars. This is becoming a big business.

Try a Chinese ADR instead of an ETF

This morning I added Kongzhong (KONG) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio for very positive price movement. This is one Chinese ADR that you should put on your watch list.

I know many investors are investing in Chinese ETF's but I think you have a better opportunity if you invest in individual Chinese ADRs selectively rather than Chinese baskets of stocks.

Kongzhong (KONG) is the leading provider of 2.5G wireless interactive entertainment, media and community services in terms of revenue to customers of China Mobile.

Technical Factors:
1 - 96% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - 11 new highs and up 39.27% in the last month
3 - Relative Strength Index is 81.09% and rising
4 - Trades around 10.07 with a 50 day moving average of 7.51

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerage analysts have published 1 strong buy and 2 hold recommendations
2 - Sales are projected to increase by 16.90% this year and 16.60% next year
3 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 62.10% this year, 27.70% next year and 15.00% annually for the next 5 years

Investor Sentiment:
1 - The general investing public is looking for Chinese ADRs and have found this one
2 - The CAPS members on Motley Fool vote 988 to 50 that this stock will beat the market
3 - The more experienced All Stars agree 328 to 11

For those of you that want to be in BRIC stocks and are ready to move beyond ETFs then selecting individual ADRs is your next logical step,

American Capital -- Appreciation plus income

This morning I added American Capital Agency Group (AGNC) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio. For those of you not familiar with the requirements to be included in this momentum portfolio a stock must trade over 100K share per day, sell for above 1 dollar, hit new highs in at least 50% of the last 20 trading sessions, have a Barchart short term technical buy signal of at least 80% and also have positive support from both the professional and amateur investing community. Let's look at this stock,

American Capital Agency Group (AGNC) is a newly-organized Delaware corporation formed to invest exclusively in single-family residential mortgage pass-through securities and collateralized mortgage obligations for which the principal and interest payments are guaranteed by a U.S. Government agency or a U.S. Government-sponsored entity. The Company will be externally managed and advised by American Capital Agency Management, LLC, a subsidiary of a wholly-owned portfolio company of American Capital. The Company will elect to be taxed, and intends to qualify, as a real estate investment trust for federal income tax purposes.

Technical Factors:
1 - 80% Barchart short term technical buy signal
2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 96% Barchart overall buy signal
4 - 14 new highs and up 3.51% in the last month
5 - Relative Strength Index 72.02% and rising
6 - Trades around 30.39 with a 50 day moving average of 29.20

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerage analysts have released 8 buy and 7 hold recommendation on this company
2 - Revenue is projected to increase by 105.30% this year and 109.70% next year

Investor Sentiment:
1 - The CAPS members on Motley Fool vote 492 to 26 that this stock will beat the market
2 - The more experienced All Stars agree with a vote of 129 to 10

One general comment: A stock is not added to the portfolio just because its popular. The first and biggest requirement is current and positive momentum. Next those stocks that are not getting positive support from both the professional and general investors are eliminated. The stocks remaining are then considered.

This second cut is a realization that a stock enjoying positive momentum will not continue upward unless it continues to have investor support and positive press.

Spice up your holdings with McCormick

OK, I can't help it but I've always had a fascination with spices. It's in my blood, I'm Dutch. During the Dutch Golden Age spices from all over the world made many a fortune for Dutch merchants. My stock of the day is McCormick & Co (MKC)

Over years coffee has become a world wide beverage. Coffee is now grown all over the globe. Insides say that Japan alone buys more Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee than is even grown in Jamaica each year. How do you know what you're getting?

Well there are a lot of ways to invest in this coffee phenomena. Coffee itself, coffee roasters and distributors, coffee retailers and restaurants that just sell more coffee than can be imagined.

On thing is for certain: coffee sales will be larger next year than they are this year and sales will get bigger annually for at least 5 years out.

Who will profit by that? Hopefully you and me.

I've got a taste for Tim Horton

I was screening for stocks hitting the most frequent new highs on Barchart and found Tim Horton (THI). They are Canada's largest quick service restaurant chain and features coffee, fresh-baked goods, soups and sandwiches and have big expansion plans not only in the US but also in the Middle East.

Although things look great on the surface I would caution you that the company's earnings will be sensitive to the commodity prices of coffee, sugar and wheat. With over 3000 locations and another 1000 planned including 120 in the Middle East they still have room to grow.

Technical Factors:
1 - 96% Barchart technical buy signals
2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 15 new highs and up 9.12% in the last month
4 - Relative Strength Index is 75.13% and climbing
5 - Trades around 45.05 with a 50 day moving average of 42.08

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerages like this stock and have 2 buy and 2 hold reports published including a buy recommendation from Goldman Sachs in December
2 - Sales are projected to increase by 5.70% this year and 6.70% next year
3 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 10.70% this year, 17.60% next year and 15.00% annually for the next 5 years

Investor Sentiment:
1 - The average investor as measured by the CAPS members on Motley Fool vote 328 to 28 that the stock will beat the market
2 - The more experienced All Stars vote 94 to 8 in agreement

If you have an appetite for a fast food restaurant with big expansion plans add this one to your watch lists

The sun shines on Emcore

This morning I was screening on Barchrart for stocks hitting the most frequent new highs and found Emcore (EMKR). Momentum investors should get on board this one. The company is highly speculative but is pursuing some highly promising solar power joint ventures in China not only with Chinese companies but the Huainan municipal government as well..

EMCORE offers a broad portfolio of compound semiconductor- based products for the broadband, fiber optic, satellite and terrestrial solar power markets. The Fiber Optic segment offers optical components, subsystems and systems for high-speed data and telecommunications networks, cable television and fiber-to-the-premises. The Photovoltaic segment provides products for both satellite and terrestrial applications. 4 - Relative Strength Index 77.38 and rising
5 - Trading around 3.12 with a 50 day moving average of 1.83

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerage analysts are not ready to recommend this company yet and using the present structure only look for the sales to increase by 7.20% this year and earnings to increase by 10.00% annually for the next 5 years
2 - If they are able to put into play the 3 joint ventures they are working on these projections will be meaningless and the earnings may soar.

Investor Sentiment:
1 - Although Wall Street is not following this stock the CAPS members on Motley Fool are betting 281 to 69 that the stock will beat the market.
2 - The more experienced All Stars are not as positive with a vote of 54 to 33

Again, this stock will rise or fall on the success of the 3 joint ventures they have in the pipeline. If you're not willing to get on board right now put this on you watch lists.

Time to invest in insureance companies

In the long run I always like well run insurance companies when the market is booming. Insurance companies have a simple business plan: underwrite properly and make a profit on the float of money between the time you collect premiums and pay out benefits. When all the stars are aligned you can make a good investment in these stocks and I think now is that time.

That's not the only reason I added Employer's Holdings (EIG) to the Barchart Van Meerten New High portfolio.

EMPLOYERS HOLDING (EIG) is a group of companies providing workers compensation insurance and services to select, small American businesses. They understand the workers compensation insurance needs of independent, entrepreneurial businesspeople because they focus on only one type of customer small businesses. They understand the small business based risks of workplace injury and accident, and they work hard to help protect each insured business's bottom line.

Technical Factors:
1 - 96% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 14 new highs and up 17.42% in the last month
4 - Relative Strength Index is 78.92% and rising
5 - Trades around 20.37 with a 50 day moving average of 17.85

Fundamental Factors:
1 - Wall Street brokerage analysts have 3 buy and 4 hold recommendations published
2 - Revenue is expected to increase by 25.20% this year and 5.30% next year
3 - Earnings are estimated to increase by 6.50% this year, 11.40% next year and 8.33% annually for the next 5 years
4 - Last November the company announced a $100 million stock buy back program and that always adds value without tax consequences

Investor Sentiment:
1 - CAPS members on Motley Fool vote 88 to 4 that the stock will beat the market
2 - All Stars agree with a vote of 32 to 0
3 - Fool notes that articles about the company have all been positive

I really think now is the time to buy well run insurance stocks but if you don't at least add this one to your watch lists.

Sunrise Senior Livings improves balance sheet

I found Sunrise Senior Living (SZR) when looking for companies recommended by Value Line and screened them on Barchart to find those showing recent price momentum. Sunrise Senior Living is the nation's largest provider of senior living services. Sunrise communities offer a full range of personalized senior living services, from independent living, to assisted living, to care for individuals with Alzheimer's and other forms of memory loss and nursing and rehabilitative care. Sunrise's senior living services are delivered by staff trained to encourage the independence, preserve the dignity, enable freedom of choice and protect the privacy of residents.

The reasons for the price momentum may be explained in the Fundamental Factors below.

Technical Factors:
1 - 96% Barchart technical buy signal2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 6 new highs and up 39.45% in the last month
4 - Relative Strength Index 73.55% and climbing
5 - Trades around 11.53 with a 50 day moving average of 7.99

Fundamental Factors:
1 - SRZ is reducing debt in a big way. They are doing this by selling facilities but entering into management contracts with the new owners. They use the sales proceeds to retire debt. This shift from a ownership to a management of senior living facilities will free it from the risks of floating debt.
2 - Wall Street brokerage analysts have 1 strong buy and a hold recommendation published
3 - Although revenue is not expected to increase in the near future earnings are expected to rise for the reasons given above
4 - Earning are projected to increase by 53.20% this year, 64.40% next year and continue by 18.00% annually for the next 5 years
5 - Beginning 1/31 the company was put on Stifel's buy list when they initiated coverage

Investor Sentiment:
1 - Motley Fool CAPS members vote 486 to 65 that the stock will beat the market
2 - The more experienced All Stars also vote 182 to 10 in agreement

My view is this is a special situation that takes advantage of the company's debt restructure.

DNR needs no Resuscitation

The world is starting to take notice of Denbury Resources (DNR) a Canadian corp. organized under the Canada Business Corp Act engaged in the acquisition, development, operation and exploration of oil and gas properties primarily in the Gulf Coast region of the U.S. through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Denbury Management, Inc. Denbury's production is primarily from developed fields close to major pipelines or refineries and established infrastructure. As a result, Denbury has not experienced any difficulty in finding a market for all of its product as it becomes available or in transporting its product to these markets.

Beside its price momentum the factor that sets this company apart from most of the other oil exploration and development companies is its use of enhanced oil recovery where carbon dioxide is pumped into the oil field in an attempt to get every last drop of oil without many of the environmental concerns of some other recovery systems.

Technical Factors:
1 - 96% Barchart technical buy signal
2 - Trend Spotter (tm) buy signal
3 - 12 new highs and up 18.79% in the last month
